I have lived in seven different places since I left home in 2012, and throughout each moving and redecorating process, I have found more and more ways to make a new place feel like home. I love making my apartments and houses feel like I’ve lived in them for a while even if it has only been a few weeks! Here are some suggestions to make your new place feel like home!

Hang up pictures immediately

Getting ready to hang up a gallery wall in our new apartment! I am a very visual person so I have to see it on the actual wall.

Hanging up pictures is an instant way to make your new apartment or house feel more like home. As you move, these photos and art pieces from home to home, they start to be what you recognize as your home, just like your furniture! Seeing pictures of your friends and family, as well as any art that you own, will help your place feel put together and quickly like your own home!!

Take the extra time to get organized

No matter how long I plan on living somewhere, the second most important thing I do is getting organized. Nothing makes you feel more moved in and settled than getting that last box unpacked, and knowing where everything is. Dedicate specific time to get this done! Based on your work and life schedule, it might have to be split up into a couple of hours here and there over the first month. If you’re lucky you might be able to dedicate an entire weekend to getting organized. Either way, GET IT DONE! You will feel so much better after you do!

Have something that never changes

Coffee bar with coffee maker, tea kettle, milk frother, and mug tree. A staple in every home I am in.

When you are moving frequently, you want to have things in your “set up” that never change! That way you have something familiar no matter where you are. For us, it is our coffee bar. We always have this tall and skinny table my dad built and it holds our coffee maker, mugs, tea kettle, coffee, and tea. It is great to have this little area to prep our drinks that never changes no matter where we live!

Let people into your home

This one isn’t possible right now (thanks COVID-19), but there is something about showing off all your hard work. Inviting friends and family into your space makes it feel like it is really your home! For now, show off your space on FaceTime, until we can invite family and friends over to see it! Letting everyone see your new home, no matter the circumstance will really make your hard work worth it!
